Don’t worry if you change your mind about your avatar, you can change this later. When you first rez in world, stay on tutorial island and learn how to walk, run, jump, the basics. Once you leave tutorial island, you will not be able to return, so stay until you have a general feel for how to navigate. If you decide to upgrade, there are several in world vendors who offer free mesh heads ie: Genus, Lelutka, Catwa. Creating your first mesh avatar is relatively inexpensive, but if you want all the bells and whistles, expect to budget for anywhere from 50usd to 100usd or more to start.

There are also places in world you can get free clothing and skins (Pink Fuel has skins for newbie avatars, some are free) for your mesh body. My first suggestion is youtube university and your search bar, use it. There is a lot of free information online and in the virtual forums.
