…So this post will come as no surprise to you. I was thinking about how some people are really into roleplay, and some people are really super not interested at all, and what that means for humanity in general as well as what that says about human relationships. In the 3D Virtual World, most of the interactions we have are through the words that we choose to type into our chat panes; so it makes total sense that we’d want to add context and tone and action to what we’re communicating. Imaginative roleplay has a big part to play in online interactions, and can really help create stronger relationships. It really is possible to build intimacy through roleplay.
So, what do I mean when I talk about building intimacy through roleplay?
Intimacy is the feeling of being emotionally close to another person. We build intimacy in our 
relationships in a lot of different ways. Perhaps you have a person you really want to feel close to, so you go out of your way to buy them some nice flowers to perk up their day. Or, you perform some act of service, like a long foot rub for your partner, or you pick up dinner on your way home so they don’t have to cook. But, what if the person you want to feel intimate with is three thousand miles away, and you only talk online? You can’t show up with dinner or rub their feet, but you can roleplay as though you did. You can talk about what you’d like to be able to do, and then describe how you would follow through. That’s the heart of roleplay: just describe how you would act in the scenario. You can build a lot of fantastic intimacy through roleplay with your partner.
Here’s a few important tips about engaging in roleplay in virtual worlds.
First up, remember that consent is key! Ask before you start roleplaying sexual acts with, to, or around other people. There is a human at the other end of that sexy avi, so treat them with the respect you wish to get in return. Next, just like any other relationship, when you’re online you’re going to have to communicate (and it’s even more important to be good and clear with your communication when it’s all in text!) Talk about what you enjoy, and ask about what they like. There should be a good back and forth, give and take: both of you should enjoy the interaction and get something out of it. If you’ve got a foot fetish and desperately want to worship their feet, that’s fine, but make sure to give them something they want and need, too. Intimacy grows best when it is built from both sides; selfish roleplay does not build great intimacy, it only gets your rocks off. And lastly, while you don’t need to sound like you fucked a thesaurus, having a good expansive vocabulary will pay off in the long run, as will basic grammar.
Imaginative roleplay has lots of benefits for you, whether you play online or in real life.
Exercising your imagination provides stress relief, abates anxiety, builds long and short term memory, and increases your creativity in other areas of your life. You can use roleplay to explore ideas and concepts that are new to you, or to add layers of complexity to old ideas. If you really love foot worship, imagine that you’re suddenly only three inches tall, confronted by a sexy foot and Mistress. Now what do you do? That’s roleplay. What if you got magically transformed into a gym sock? Or maybe, your Mistress comes home after a long day at the office, and puts you to work rubbing her feet and giving her a pedicure. All of those are roleplay scenarios that you can explore and have fun with. There’s no need to stick to strictly realistic games all the time, or to deny yourself the indulgence of your fetish just because there’s no one there in the room with you who’s feet you can kiss. Use roleplay, online, virtual, over the phone, or in person, to create intimacy, meet your sexual and physical needs, and reap all the benefits of using your mind fully.
